Flash Flooding Advice

                Flash Flooding
Flooding is the most common natural hazard in the UK. ‘Flash’ flooding happens when water rises exceptionally quickly in response to very heavy rainfall. Flash flooding is rare but can be very dangerous.

Across Dorset there are many communities where this type of flooding could happen. Climate change is increasing the likelihood of extreme weather events such as flash flooding happening, and most major flash floods occur in places where there hasn’t been a big flood in living memory. They often occur in the summer. Flash flooding can happen so quickly that a warning isn’t able to be issued, so it’s important that you know what to do and how to stay safe.

Know the signs
Flash flooding can happen suddenly with no warning. Some of the signs include:
•	very heavy rain, often from thunderstorms
•	severe weather reports and warnings
•	rising water levels
•	dark water that is moving with great force
•	debris in rivers and streams
•	damage to buildings from flood water

Staying safe
Flash flooding can be very unexpected. You may need to act:
•	quickly
•	before a warning is given
•	before the emergency services get to you

To make yourself safer during flash flooding:
•	if it is safe, move to higher ground or the upper floor (storey) of a building
•	do not walk or drive through the flood water
•	do what the emergency services tell you
•	call 999 if you are trapped or need emergency help

Shallow flood water (around 15cm or 6 inches) that does not look dangerous can knock a person over or conceal hazards. It only takes around 60cm (2 feet) of water to carry away a vehicle of any size.
Do not use flimsy or temporary structures – like a tent or a caravan – for shelter during flash flooding.
Find out more about what to do during a flood.

What can you do now?
•	Check if you are at risk and sign up to warnings if one is available for your area: Sign up for flood warnings - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
•	Register to the Met Office’s Severe Weather Warning Service: Weather warnings guide - Met Office
•	Check the Environment Agency’s 5-day Flood Forecast: Check for flooding in England - GOV.UK (check-for-flooding.service.gov.uk)
•	Check if your insurance covers flooding
•	Know how to turn off gas, electricity and water supplies
•	Contact Floodline for further advice:

Charmouth looked stunning in the sunshine as The South West in Bloom Judges toured the village on Tuesday 8 July. They visited The Bank House Cafe, the Library, the Playing Fields, the Foreshore, The Heritage Coast Centre, the Allotments and the Cemetery as well as looking at many others in between including the flower displays at both our lovely pubs. We are judged on floral and garden displays but also how we care for the environment and community involvement. Now for the long wait until October when the winners are announced!!

Last night's VE Day 80th Anniversary Beacon lighting in Charmouth was a truly poignant occasion. The evening commenced with the moving sound of the bugle played by Geoff Davis, followed by a respectful two-minute silence before the beacon was illuminated. We were honoured to have the High Sheriff of Dorset, Callum Bremner, read the official declaration on behalf of His Majesty The King. The atmosphere was incredibly special as three local choirs then led a beautiful sing-a-long of "I Vow to Thee My Country." A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us to commemorate this important anniversary.
